Contributing to the Database

AniKura’s database is built through automated data ingestion from upstream APIs (AniList, MAL, Trakt, TMDB, MangaDex) combined with community contributions from users like you. This model is inspired by TMDB — the community improves what automation provides as a baseline.

Every contribution matters: fixing a typo, uploading a better cover image, adding a missing staff credit, or submitting a brand-new title you just heard about all make the database better for everyone.

Trust Level System

AniKura uses a tiered trust system to balance data quality with contributor autonomy. As your approved contribution count grows, your edits require less manual review.

Trust Level 0 — New Contributor

  • All edits require moderator approval before going live
  • Can submit edits, new entries, and images
  • Default level for all new accounts

Trust Level 1 — Contributor

Unlocked after: 10 approved edits

  • Minor edits auto-approve (typo fixes, formatting corrections, adding alternative titles)
  • Major edits (synopsis changes, genre modifications, status updates) still require approval
  • Image uploads still require approval

Trust Level 2 — Trusted Contributor

Unlocked after: 50 approved contributions

  • All metadata edits auto-approve (synopses, genres, dates, episode counts, staff credits)
  • New entry suggestions still require approval
  • Image uploads auto-approve
  • Can flag other users’ edits for review

Trust Level 3 — Curator

Unlocked after: 200 approved contributions + manual promotion by a moderator

  • All contributions auto-approve including new entries
  • Can approve or reject other users’ pending contributions
  • Can revert any edit via the revision history
  • Earns the Curator badge on their profile

Trust levels can be revoked if a contributor repeatedly submits inaccurate or malicious edits.

Moderation and Revision History

All contributions requiring approval appear in the moderation queue. Each pending contribution shows:

  • The contributor’s username, Trust Level, and approval rate
  • The entity that was edited or created
  • A diff view showing exactly what changed (old → new)
  • The contributor’s edit summary
  • Source links for verification

Every entity maintains a complete revision history: every field change with before/after values, who made the change, when, and whether it was community or automated. Click “History” on any page to view.

Conflict resolution: Community edits from Level 2+ contributors take precedence over automated data ingestion. Level 0–1 edits defer to automated data unless a moderator explicitly approves the community version.

Image processing pipeline

When you upload an image, AniKura automatically:

  1. Validates file type and size
  2. Stores the original in Cloudflare R2 (archival copy)
  3. Deduplicates via SHA-256 hash
  4. Serves via Cloudflare Image Resizing (WebP conversion, responsive sizing, quality optimization)

Upload the highest quality version you have — the system handles format and compression.

Image guidelines

  • Prefer official key visuals, cover art, and promotional images over screenshots or fan art
  • Do not upload watermarked images
  • Screenshots must be clean: no subtitles, no player UI
  • Only upload images you have the right to distribute (official materials, screenshots from licensed content, or fan art with the artist’s explicit permission)

Code of Conduct

  • Be accurate — verify edits against official sources and include source links
  • Be respectful — edit summaries should be professional; use the appeals process for disputes
  • Don’t vandalize — submitting false information results in trust level revocation
  • Don’t spam — trivial edits to inflate contribution counts are detectable

Getting Started

  1. Create an account at anikura.io/register
  2. Browse any anime or manga page and click Edit
  3. Your first edits will be reviewed — this is normal and expected
  4. After 10 approved edits, you reach Level 1 and minor edits auto-approve
  5. Keep contributing — the community improves what automation can’t

Thank you for making AniKura’s data the best in the industry.
